Is your motorcycle ready for spring?

The most important tasks for the start of the season

  • Battery check: If the battery was left installed during the winter break, your motorcycle or scooter may need a jump start. It’s best to connect the battery to a charger. If the battery was removed, you should treat the terminals with a special battery terminal grease after reconnecting them. This protects the exposed areas from corrosion. If you’re having carburetor issues, a starter spray is often necessary as well.
  • Engine oil: Be sure to check the engine oil level before the first test ride. Motorcycles require an oil and oil filter change once a year.
  • Fluid levels: Check the coolant, brake fluid, and hydraulic fluid. Brake fluid should be replaced every three years.
  • Electrical system: Test the lighting system, turn signals, brake lights, and horn to ensure they are working properly. Any defects, such as broken bulbs, must be repaired.
  • Tires: Check the tire pressure and overall condition of the tires. The tread depth on motorcycle tires must be at least 1.6 millimeters.
  • Test the hand and foot brakes: The brakes should bite hard and cleanly. Brake pads rarely last more than three seasons. Regular inspection and timely replacement can help avoid the need to buy a new brake disc.
  • Check the chain and chain tension: After cleaning the sprocket and chainring, you must check the tension of the chain on the rear wheel. If one of the sprockets is worn or the chain can be lifted too far off the sprocket, the entire drive train must always be replaced—that is, the chain, sprocket, and chainring.

General Information for Motorcyclists in Austria:

What must you carry on a motorcycle in Austria?

In Austria, only a first-aid kit is required for single-track vehicles; in other countries, a high-visibility vest, warning triangle, and spare bulbs are often required as well. Multi-track motorcycles, such as motorcycles with sidecars, trikes, or quads, must, however, carry a high-visibility vest and a suitable warning device. With regard to required documents (driver’s license and vehicle registration certificate), the same rules apply as for car drivers.
